OnSign Installation with Samsung Tizen Cloning

Overview

Installing OnSign on multiple Samsung Tizen screens can be time-consuming when done individually. By using Samsung's native Tizen Cloning feature, you can significantly speed up the deployment process. This tutorial explains how to leverage cloning to efficiently roll out OnSign across your entire screen fleet.

Step 1: Install OnSign on Your Master Screen

Before you can clone, you need to set up one screen as your "master" device with OnSign properly installed and configured.

Installation Guide

Follow the official OnSign installation tutorial here: Installing the Tizen Player Softwar

This guide covers all supported Tizen versions and provides installation URLs for both landscape and portrait orientations.

Key Installation URLs:

  • Landscape Mode: https://tizen.onsign.tv
  • Portrait Mode: https://tizen.onsign.tv/portrait

For detailed portrait mode configuration, refer to: Rotating the Screen (Portrait)

Step 2: Understand the Tizen Cloning Strategy

Tizen Cloning allows you to export the complete configuration from your master screen and import it into target devices. This captures:

  • Picture and display settings
  • Sound settings
  • Time and language configurations
  • OnSign player application and its settings
  • Power and eco-mode scheduling
  • Auto-on/off schedules

What Cloning Does NOT Include:

  • Network settings (WiFi/Ethernet credentials must be configured separately on each device)

Step 3: Export Configuration from Master Screen

Once your master OnSign installation is complete and configured exactly as you want it, follow these steps to create a clone file:

Prerequisites:

  • USB drive formatted in FAT32
  • USB drive is empty or contains no conflicting files
  • Master screen is powered on

Export Process:

  1. Insert the USB drive into the USB port on your master Samsung Tizen display (typically located on the back)
  2. Press the MENU button on your remote control
  3. Navigate to Settings
    • Look for the "Settings" or "System Settings" option in the main menu
  4. Confirm Clone Creation
    • If the USB drive doesn't contain an existing .sclone file, the screen will display a confirmation message
    • Select "Yes" or "OK" to proceed with creating the clone file
  5. Wait for Completion
    • The screen will process and create a .sclone configuration file on your USB drive
    • A confirmation message will appear when the process is complete
  6. Safely Remove the USB Drive
    • Once complete, safely eject the USB drive from the master screen

You now have a complete backup of your OnSign installation that can be deployed to other screens.

Step 4: Import Configuration to Target Screens

Prerequisites:

  • Target screen must be the same Tizen version as the master screen
  • USB drive containing the .sclone file from the master screen
  • Target screen is powered on

Import Process:

  1. Insert the USB drive into the USB port on the target Samsung Tizen display
  2. Press the MENU button on the remote control
  3. Navigate to Settings
    • Access the same Settings menu where you created the clone
  4. Select Import/Restore
    • The screen will detect the .sclone file on the USB drive
    • Select the option to import or restore the configuration
  5. Confirm the Import
    • A confirmation message may appear indicating that this will overwrite current settings
    • Select "Yes" to proceed
  6. Wait for Completion
    • The screen will import all settings from the clone file
    • The device may restart automatically
    • Once complete, OnSign should launch automatically and your configuration is applied
  7. Configure Network Settings
    • After the clone is restored, you'll need to manually configure network settings on each screen
    • Go to Menu > System > Network to set up WiFi or Ethernet connection
    • This is the only manual configuration step required per device

Important Considerations

Tizen Version Compatibility

Critical: Cloning only works between devices running the exact same Tizen version.

  • A clone from a Tizen 6.5 device will only work on other Tizen 6.5 devices
  • A clone from a Tizen 7.0 device will only work on other Tizen 7.0 devices
  • Attempting to import a clone from a different Tizen version will result in failure

Before cloning, always verify:

  • Master screen model and Tizen version (e.g., Samsung QBB with Tizen 6.5)
  • Target screen model and Tizen version match exactly
  • Refer to the OnSign Tizen compatibility list for supported models

Portrait vs. Landscape Installation

OnSign installation differs between landscape and portrait orientations. The player app is installed via different URLs:

  • Landscape: https://tizen.onsign.tv
  • Portrait: https://tizen.onsign.tv/portrait

Best Practice: Create separate clone files for different orientations

Why separate clones matter:
  • A landscape OnSign clone will have all landscape-specific settings embedded
  • Installing this on a portrait-oriented screen may cause display issues
  • Orientation affects display resolution, scaling, and app behavior
Recommended Approach:

If you have a mixed fleet with both landscape and portrait screens:

  1. Create a Landscape Master
    • Install OnSign in landscape mode on one Tizen device
    • Configure all desired settings
    • Export to USB as "OnSign_Landscape_Clone.sclone"
  2. Create a Portrait Master
    • Install OnSign in portrait mode on another Tizen device (same Tizen version)
    • Configure all desired settings
    • Export to USB as "OnSign_Portrait_Clone.sclone"
  3. Deploy Accordingly
    • Use the landscape clone for all landscape target screens
    • Use the portrait clone for all portrait target screens

This ensures each screen receives the correct orientation-specific configuration.
