Updating Content On Offline Players

Players without an internet connection cannot receive publishes automatically from the cloud. To deliver content changes, triggers, or other configuration to these devices, OnSign generates an offline update package that can be transferred using a USB drive.

Note: This feature is not available to all accounts. If you need access to offline updates, contact OnSign support or your sales representative.

How It Works

When you select the "Download Offline Updates" action for a player, OnSign compiles that player's pending changes (content, triggers, etc.) into a file with a .bundle extension. This file is sent by email and needs to be copied to a USB drive, which is then physically connected to the device. The player detects the bundle, applies the changes locally, and restarts on its own once the process finishes.

Configuration Steps

  1. Make the desired change on the player as you normally would, as if it were online: add content, a trigger, or any other configuration.
  2. On the "Players" page, select the checkbox next to the target player.
  1. Click "Actions", then click "Download Offline Updates".
  1. You'll receive an email with a "Download Bundle" button. Click it to download the .bundle file.
  2. Copy the .bundle file to a USB drive. Remember to format the drive before using it.
  3. Connect the USB drive to the player's USB port.
  4. A prompt will ask for permission for the OnSign app to access the connected device. Click "OK".
  1. The Player displays the "Copying Files from Offline Update Bundle" screen while it copies the files from the drive.
  1. Once finished, the player displays "Offline Update Successful" and asks you to remove the USB drive. Remove it. The Player restarts automatically and applies the changes.

Troubleshooting

  • The "Download Offline Updates" option doesn't appear in the "Actions" menu: this usually happens when more than one player is selected at once, or when the selected player doesn't support offline updates. Select a single compatible player and try again.
  • The bundle email never arrives: check the spam folder and confirm the email address on the account is correct. If the issue persists, generate the bundle again by repeating the "Download Offline Updates" action.
  • The player doesn't recognize the USB drive or never shows the permission prompt: confirm the drive is formatted with a compatible file system (FAT32) and that the .bundle file sits at the root of the drive, not inside a subfolder.
  • The process stalls on the "Copying Files from Offline Update Bundle" screen: disconnect the drive, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it. If the bundle is corrupted or incomplete, download it again from the email link.
